It’s summer in Tokyo and the square watermelon season is upon us. Farmers in Kanagawa Prefecture initially grew the oddly-shaped melons as a convenient solution for "space-cramped Japanese refrigerators", but they quickly became even better known for their novelty value —as The Simpsons attests.
Square watermelons will be available from supermarkets and produce vendors across Tokyo starting this week, but be warned; the delicious and cuboid fruits cost a mean JPY10,000 (approx US$91).
